I know you may be wondering why you haven’t heard from me in a while… but have no fear because I am here! I have just been very, very tired because Mama and Papa have been keeping me SO busy!
They have been keeping me busy doing lots of hikes! And I’m not just talking about walks around the block hikes, I’m talking major WEAR YOU OUT kind of hikes!
Did you know that the Petrified Forest National Park is actually a pet friendly park?
I was super excited to hear this, because most National Parks do NOT allow pets on trails.
So when we came into Arizona from New Mexico, the Petrified Forest was one of the first places we went to. But it was just for the day because there is no camping there.
This is where the hiking started. But I must admit, I was a bit confused. Okay, I was a LOT confused. Because I could not find a forest ANYWHERE.
I thought a forest was supposed to be full of trees! But Mama said these trees were petrified, which means they are really, really old. So I thought there was going to be really old, half hanging over trees.
But no. That was not the case.
So I bet you’re wondering what I did see in this Petrified Forest… Well let me tell you.
I guess a really long time ago this area was a forest. And then it got wiped out. And all covered up.
Now some of the dirt and rocks are drifting away to reveal the huge logs that used to be forest.
So as I am hiking around, I get to look at lots of logs laying around. At first I was skeptical, until I realized that these logs were actually full of some pretty cool colors. They didn’t look like regular wood. Which I guess is how you can tell they are petrified… or something like that. Don’t ask me, I’m just a pup! I don’t really know much about these things.
So anyways, the Petrified Forest is where the hiking started. But what really wore me out, was once we got to Lake Havasu City.
First, Mama and Papa took me to the most AMAZING DOG PARK THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN!
And I’m NOT exaggerating either!!
It was super amazing! We are in Arizona which is full of desert! Which has kinda been a problem for me, because I had no place to potty. I was actually pretty upset that I had to learn to potty on the gravel. But when I went to this dog park I saw what I had been missing – GRASS!! Can you believe this place was so nicely landscaped?! With a walk way and a play area and it was so nice and CLEAN too. Not to mention all the dogs and the people.
Playing with dogs is fun and all. And believe me, I got my wiggle butt a going! But I also had lots of fun going from one person to the next person getting lots of love – my favorite!
Then believe it or not, the fun continued. To wear me out, that is…
There is a park here called Sara Park. And at this park is a trail called The Crack In The Rock Trail.
And believe me, they are not even close to kidding.
What an adventure!
Just me, Mama and Papa went off on this amazing hike! We went down this big gravel wash that used to be a river, until we came to the giant crack in the rock.
Here you can see Mama giving me a pep talk. We had heard it was a challenge, and boy did we hear right!!
We were climbing all over! Up and down and over. Lots of over. In fact, we were so busy, Papa didn’t get a chance to take to many pictures.
But there was this one section where people actually have to slide down the rock!
I was SO excited! But I was SO nervous too!!
Mama went first, and I really wanted to follow. But it was a long way down! And Mama went really fast too!
So after I finally got up my nerve, I let Papa grab hold of me and I went down the slide on Papa’s lap!!
I was so excited, we were having so much fun!
Then it got even trickier! There was a skinny passage where a rock had fallen and gotten lodged. If you were really small you could go under, but most went over. So Mama went all the way over, while Papa stood in the skinny section. He picked me up, and passed me to Mama over the rock. Oh my goodness I bet we were a sight!
After that you’ll never believe what happened… I got to continue the hike OFF LEASH!!
I was like, whoa!! This is great!! I especially loved it once we got out of the crack in the rock and finally made it to the lake! There were birds and ducks everywhere and well, I just couldn’t help myself!
As soon as I saw the birds, I perked up, and took off!! I could hear Mama start to panic, and I could hear Papa hollering about birds. But they didn’t have to worry much because as soon as I got to the lake I just jumped in and started swimming after all the ducks!
I was having such a good time too! It was like the best day ever! I even got to hang out at the lake a while and chew some sticks while I was there and take a few swims. I was having a blast!
We took the trail that went across the ridge line to get back to the truck, because Mama and Papa said it would be too hard to go back up the crack in the rock. But I think I could have done it.
So anyways we hiked along the ridge line. And I was still off leash!! Mama said I did really good too. I learned how to FOLLOW.
Papa was the leader up the trail and I had to follow behind him. Then Mama followed behind me. There were some parts where I got to lead and Papa followed me, but I had to be really good about listening. There was only one time where I saw something and was about to bolt down the hill side, but Papa caught me. And It’s probably a good thing he did because I made some rocks slide down.
So after 5 miles we finally got back to the truck. And boy, was I TIRED. I was so tired I have pretty much spent the past 2 days sleeping on the couch. And I've been eyeballing my Mama and hoping she doesn’t reach for that hiking pack again any time soon! This golden girl needs to rest!!!
