We have been in New Mexico for a few days now, and I have to tell you, there’s something spooky about this place…
Our campground is just outside the city of Roswell. Have you ever heard of this place? Apparently it became pretty famous after the “incident” of 1947.
What “incident” you ask?
Supposedly nobody really knows… Or do they?
Well, I am only a Josie, but let me tell you that there are a few things that I know. And I am willing to tell you, whether people want me to or not.
So it all started with a walk to the lake. The “bottomless” lake.
How can a lake be bottomless? Yup – spooky.
I still can’t get over all the smells around here. And boy are there a lot of other dogs too. It has been driving me CRAZY that I haven’t been able to meet them all! But I see them. And their people. They are all over the place. I wonder if any of them have made the same discovery as me. I don’t think so, because nobody is talking about it.
So as I was saying… it started with a walk to the “bottomless” lake. The water was super clear, which is super cool. And it tasted really good too.
One thing I’ve learned around here is to drink lots of water! Mama’s always pushing the bowl of water on me, and for once I am so thankful! I’ve been gobbling it down!
Back to the lake! I was exploring around the lake with Mama, and there were lots of buildings set up for people to relax in the shade on really hot days. Well, as we went around these buildings… I saw it.
At first I just stopped and stared. There was really something spooky about this tower right in front of me. Something so spooky I just didn’t know what to do with myself! So of course I had to go a little Josie crazy!
This tower was pretty tall, but I was not intimidated! I tried my hardest to climb up that tower! But I was having no luck! So of course I started barking at it!!
Mama let me explore and explore all the way around the tower. Boy was it intriguing!
I think Mama thought I was a little crazy! And I mean a little more crazy than I normally am! She couldn’t figure out why I was about to attack the tower!
She tried telling me there were no squirrels up there. She tried telling me there were no animals at all…
But I know that tower has a secret! And I was trying everything I could to protect Mama from that tower!
I don’t know why she was so reluctant to believe me that something was wrong… doesn’t she know what happened around here in 1947?
As we walked away from that tower, back to our camper, I stopped several times to turn around and growl at that tower… just so it knew that I was here, and I was watching it!!
Don’t worry Mama… I’ll protect you from those green guys! I am officially on watch. I have the scarf and everything!!
Officially On Watch -
I tell you what – my nose has been in overdrive ever since we hit these southern states. There are more smells and noises than I know what to do with.
Today we made it to Texas! Papa said we didn’t need electric hook ups, but as luck would have it, there were no other spots in the park that were big enough for our castle of a camper.
And being connected to electricity was a very good thing.
We do have lots of solar power, because boy is that sun beating DOWN! It is so hot here I don’t know what to do with myself!
So even though we have solar power, I am super thankful for the electric hook-up so we can run the air conditioning for a little while and cool down the camper.
The first thing I noticed when we pulled through the campground were these giant pointy hats everywhere. And they had tables underneath them. It’s like they want people to sit under the giant hats. People can be weird sometimes…
So Papa got us all backed in and parked in our spot like the pro that he is. Then Mama let me out so I could check out all the new smells.
Well let me tell you, we no sooner came around to the other side of the truck and I immediately spotted it. But the problem was, I had no idea WHAT I was looking at.
It was gray and round and it was digging fiercely in the dirt.
Well I immediately had to go in crazy Josie mode! I just had to make sure that Mama and Papa knew about this intruder!
Papa grabbed his camera, because that’s what Papa does. Mama sat with me and tried to help sooth my craziness. I bet you can guess how well that went!
Turns out that round gray thing is called an armadillo.
Arm-a-what? I didn’t see any arms on that thing. But it did have a pointy nose.
Then he went scurrying off to who knows where.
Well after that, I was just excited as ever to get out and do some exploring!!
Lucky for me, Mama and Papa decided we should go on a hike. They said we were going to hike Bull Canyon Trail.
I was really hoping to see more of those armadillos. There was armadillo poo everywhere, but every time I wanted to sniff Mama would say “Leave it” and I would have to keep going.
I got to lead the way and boy was that fun. There were so many smells and I was just dying to hop off the trail and follow my nose! But every time I tried Mama would say “Nope” and I would have to keep going.
But Mama said I did a good job. We went up and down through this canyon. Over lots of red rocks and skinny trails. It was fun.
But it was also dangerous. Mama said there were things called cactuses that were not safe. And that’s why I had to stay on the trail. That Mama is one smart cookie – she is always looking out for my safety. She even kept making me drink water. And boy was I glad. I had no idea hiking in Texas would wear me out so much!
By the time I got back home I just wanted to crash. But Mama insisted on rubbing me down and feeling my paws to make sure I was okay and I didn’t accidently get into a cactus.
Now it’s time to rest up. Who knows what is in store for me tomorrow!
Well we’ve been back on the road again for a few days. Who knew there was so much to see? And that it would take so much driving?
It seems like we have been driving and driving and driving. But we have really only gone south. We still have a lot farther to go west.
But the change in weather has been super nice – I am not complaining! If it’s one thing I love to do, it’s lay outside in the sunshiney and sniff the breeze.
If it’s another thing I love to do, it’s explore new trails! It started out raining this morning, but it stopped by the afternoon. We’ve taken a few walks and such since we hit the road again, but today we actually went hiking!
I have missed hiking. Mama was a little sad because she did not have her Leda to hike with, so I told Papa he could focus on taking some pictures while I hiked with Mama to help her feel better.
I am not the great hiker that Leda was, but I tried really hard to do my best. And let me tell you our skills were put to the test!
We went back and forth on lots of switchbacks and we even crossed a river by stepping on rocks!
I think Papa was expecting me to yank Mama right off those rocks and into the water because he sure was ready with his camera. But I was a very good girl and took it one stone at a time.
Mama even said she was impressed after we came back down. See, normally I am up front forging ahead. Well, when we were going down hill I slowed down when Mama told me to so she wouldn’t fall. Mama was so proud of me!
So we took this trail called Goat Rock Trail. It was like walking a goat trail, I think. There was lots of leaves and water running everywhere. I imagine this place can be one big mud slide with too much rain.
It seemed that I was constantly getting distracted by new smells. There are smells around here that I have just never smelled before! And every little movement caught my eye. I really really wanted to bolt off the edge of the trail and explore, but Mama told me it was not a good idea.
And we passed lots of holes. Every time I walked past one, I wanted to stick my nose in because they sure did smell interesting! But Mama absolutely would not allow me. She said puppies can lose their nose by doing that. And well, I really want to keep my nose. So I decided to listen to her. But every hole I came to was even more tempting.
The end of our trail came to Goat Rock. I don’t think any of us were real impressed. But I sure looked gorgeous sitting in front of it!
We are leaving this Arkansas place tomorrow and heading farther west. I wonder what new smells are waiting for me!
I think it’s happening again. There is stuff everywhere.
Mama is doing laundry. She is going through the closets gathering up our things that we have stashed here at Nana and Grandpapa’s house.
Papa has been studying the big map and writing stuff down.
Mama and Papa have been watching the weather very closely. Apparently it has been a very cold winter for Ohio. With lots of snow that is not normal.
A week ago it got into the 50s for like one day. All the snow melted. But then it got cold again and more snow came.
It has been below freezing for a long time. And Mama has been worried about our camper.
Although it has been sitting safe and sound at our cousin’s place, Mama is worried about the cold. She is mostly worried about trying to get it packed up and things being frozen. So we keep watching the weather.
Today the temperatures finally made it above freezing. It’s supposed to be in the 40s this weekend. But then on Monday they say there is rain coming and the temperatures are going to drop again.
So Mama and Papa decided. They decided this weekend is the weekend to hit the road. They say we need to be outta here before the rain comes Monday and the temps drop again.
So today Papa went out to our camper and got the furnace going. Mama and Papa piled stuff up in the truck. Mama even put stuff in Grandpapa’s car.
Mama said she needed to give the camper a good scrubbing before packing it back up. So Mama and Papa went to the camper today to get some work done. While I stayed home with my Nana and Grandpapa.
We are going to have a few busy days getting things ready this weekend. Mama took out all of the food, clothes, blankets, pillows, and anything she thought might not be good to sit outside. So there’s lots to load back up.
I’m not exactly sure where we are going next. But I’m pretty sure it’s south so we can try and escape some cold temps.
And even though I am really excited for more adventures, I am going to be sad to leave this place.
I have really enjoyed the soft couch, all the room to roll around on the carpet, and all the extra love from all the people here.
I have gotten to see lots of family, and I am going to miss them. I am especially going to miss Auburn and Sophia. Auburn was so fun to run around and be goofy with. Sophia always snuggles with me, loves me, lays with me, and helps me look for squirrels.
I am going to be sad to leave this comfy place and all the people. But I am excited for new places and adventures to share with you.
Being thankful is not always an easy thing. Although it seems like it should be the easiest thing ever.
In a world that is super busy, take the time to appreciate. Don’t say there is no time, MAKE the time.
Make the time to be thankful for who you have in your life. One day they will not be there, and then it will be too late.
Make the time to spend time with those who are important to you, and who you love. You don’t have to do anything special. Just be together. Being together, in each other’s company, making sure they know that you love them.
Make the time to be thankful. And not just for one day of the year. That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.
Be thankful, like me. I am thankful every day.
I am thankful I found my mama and papa. Sure, it is too bad I did not find them earlier in my life, and I didn’t have more time with them. But being with them has helped me to see what life is all about. Being with those you love and who love you.
I am thankful for my crazy sister Josie. Lots of people are surprised that two adult girl dogs were able to come together in the same house and get along. I don’t think Josie has ever been mad at me. Maybe annoyed, but not mad. We have never had an argument.
I am thankful for these past 3 months of travel. We have been on so many adventures! And it has been so much fun! I have met people and dogs and seen lots of animals and really cool places. I have been on amazing hikes and I have gotten to spend every day with my mama. It has been the best time of my life!
I am thankful to be spending this time in Ohio with family. I have gotten lots of love from Sophia, my grandparents, and the whole family. They have welcomed me to their homes and given me lots of treats and love.
It makes me sad to know, that it will not last forever. Which is why we need to be happy, now. And enjoy life, now. And spend time with those we love, now.
Last week I started getting short of breath and tired quickly. My mama and papa took me to the doctor, here in Findlay. We found out that I have an aggressive cancer in my spleen and in my chest, and my time will be over very soon.
It has been a surprise for everyone, including me. But the doctor gave me a shot to help me feel comfortable.
So now I am spending my time with my family and being even more spoiled than before! Can you believe that is even possible? Lots of food, lots of naps, lots of rub downs and lots of love.
I am thankful for where I am, it is where I want to be.
We have finally made it. Like really, made it. And after days of driving, we are done. And thank goodness for that.
We made the final trip to Findlay, Ohio. I am finally at grandpapa’s house. And it is time for a snooze.
This house is perfect. There is carpet, and a comfy couch. Not to mention a wonderful bed. And a back porch for Josie to sun bathe, if the sun ever comes out. And now I am snoozing… anywhere and everywhere.
It was fun to see Sophia again and to meet Auburn in Indiana. But Auburn likes to bark. And I like the quiet. Grandpapa’s house is quiet. And I really like that while I am snoozing everywhere.
I was a little unsure at first when we got here with our Castle. Papa parked it out front on the street. I thought we would stay in the camper like when we were at Papa’s friends’ house in Canada. But then Mama started taking all of our stuff out!!
She took out all of her clothes and Papa’s clothes. Then she took out all the blankets, pillows, and even all the food. I insisted on sitting on the couch in the camper while she did this. I mean, if Mama’s stuff is coming out – mine better be coming out too!!
And it did! Mama took our food, our bowls, our basket and our beds!
Then when I finally followed Mama back into the house, I found all of our stuff in the bedroom! Sweet!
So now we are at grandpapa’s house in Findlay. I don’t know how long we are staying, but we must be staying or a while since all of our stuff is here now. And that is fine with me. Now I will get back to my snoozing.
OMG! These have been the best few days! Mama told me that all the driving would be worth it. I wasn’t sure if I really believed her for a while, but she was definitely RIGHT!
I finally got to see Sophia again! It has been so AWESOME! I was so excited when we got to her house I did my wiggle butt dance all over the place! I was crying because I was SO happy! Leda was pretty happy too. She walked right in the house like she owned the place.
I am in heaven rolling all over the carpet, the couch, and anyone who will pet me. I think I’ve made two more good friends, Sophia’s mom and dad. It is fun to hop from one person to the next, giving everyone equal chance to pet me.
I also got to meet Sophia’s pup, Auburn! Auburn can be just as crazy as me! Isn’t that great?! I’m not sure if Auburn was too happy about two new big dogs invading her house, and it took her a little bit to figure out what was going on…
But then we all three went into her fenced in backyard, and Auburn got to show us her super ball fetching skills! She is amazing! She is lightning fast! I don’t think I can keep up with her!
Turns out, me and Auburn have the same wiggle butt dance! We both get real low to the ground, spin in circles, and then run all over!! It was lots of fun to do the wiggle butt dance with Auburn! She would spin, then I would spin, then she would spin, and then I would spin until we got kicked out of the house and got to run circles together in the back yard.
Today I got to surprise Sophia AGAIN! I was waiting for her at the bus stop when she came home from school. She was super happy. And so was I! I even got to say hi to some of the other kids who got off the bus. It was like a magic bus full of kids who love dogs. I bet I would love riding on a bus.
Mama said we are going to hang out with Auburn and Sophia for a few days. Then we are going on one more drive to Ohio. But Mama said not to be sad, because we are going to get to see Auburn and Sophia a LOT while we are in Ohio for the holidays. I’m so happy to have more people to love on me and pet me. It is sure to be lots of fun.
I am so excited I can barely sit still! And that is really hard right now because we are doing a lot of driving.
Now that we have spent all this time exploring around and seeing all this wildlife, Papa says it is time to head east where there isn’t any more spectacular views.
It is November, in fact we are already a week into November. And I remember Mama saying that we were going to see family for the holidays.
As we make our trek east, before we get to Ohio, we are going to be stopping in Ft. Wayne, Indiana! That may not sound exciting for you, but it is definitely exciting for me! Let me tell you why!
My Mama’s brother lives in Ft. Wayne! But what’s even more exciting than that is SOPHIA LIVES IN FT. WAYNE!
Sophia came to visit me up in Alaska last summer. She spent three weeks with me at my house and we had a really good time. We played together and she snuggled with me. I slept on her lap when she would read her books.
It has been a long time, but I remember her. And I can’t wait to see her again!
I heard my Mama talking and apparently there is a pup who lives with Sophia, and her name is Auburn. I can’t wait to meet Auburn, I hope she likes to play!
So for now while my Papa continues to drive these miles and miles and miles… I will curl up on my pillow with Leda and dream about seeing Sophia and meeting Auburn. I can’t wait to tell you all about it!
Have you ever met a buffalo? I hear that buffalo are the largest mammal on our continent. They are big, that is one thing for sure.
We’ve been driving around all these places and seeing all these animals – sometimes I think it’s just too much! There were SO many buffalo when we were in that Yellowstone place.
But then we came here to Custer State Park in South Dakota and I got to meet a buffalo! Okay, well maybe not actually meet a buffalo. But I came really close! About as close as anyone. Or at least, as close as my Mama would let me.
It’s no secret I get a little crazy sometimes. And when you wake up from being curled up snoozing in the back seat, and you see nothing but buffalo all around the truck, well you just have to get a little crazy. Sorry Papa, but you just have to. At least you do if your name is Josie, like me.
I couldn’t believe it when I saw all the buffalo around our truck. I mean, why didn’t Leda wake me up? I look over and Leda is just sitting there looking out the window like we are not surrounded by buffalo. Seriously? Get with the program, Leda!
Then Papa pulled the truck into the fence area, where there’s a wildlife center. The buffalo were surrounding this place. Wildlife Center is definitely a fitting name, for sure with all the wildlife everywhere. Apparently, the buffalo can’t come inside the fence. But there was no gate. Just some weird metal thing for a ground and metal sides. I thought for sure a buffalo was going to come walk right over to us.
You’ll never believe what happened next… my Papa let me out of the truck!! He said it was an excellent opportunity to help me learn how to act around wildlife so I didn’t always go so crazy.
I was super excited, or at least I thought I was. Until I jumped out and saw how gigantic these buffalo are!! It freaked me out – just a little. I cried and whined, only a little.
But then I realized my Papa was with me and I got a little more courage. I sat and looked at the buffalo, who were looking at me! There was one guy who had his head over the fence to get a closer look. I wonder if they had ever seen a golden girl before. Pretty sure they thought I was gorgeous.
Leda got to come out of the truck too. But don’t you know she didn’t make a peep? She just stood next to Mama and looked around at all the buffalo. She even smiled for her picture. But then one of the buffalo at the fence started making a really weird loud noise, and Mama said it was time to go.
We hoped back in the truck and left.
And you know what? I didn’t even go crazy when we drove through those buffalo to head down the road.
If there’s one thing our Mama worries about a lot, it’s whether or not we are comfy. Are we comfy? What do you think…
There are more blankets, towels, pillows, and beds for us than there are for our people on this trip of a lifetime. Yup, believe it. It’s true. Much to our Papa’s dismay.
Some people have wondered if we are comfy riding around in our diesel. Well let me tell you, not only is Mama worried about us being comfy, she is also concerned about us being safe.
You can see that we have everything we need. The seat is covered in sheets and towels to keep us comfy. No, it’s not to protect the new truck Papa, quit thinking about your awesome diesel and think about us, like Mama.
Mama even took two action packers, and put them in the people foot space. But not before she put big pads on them and covered them with fabric to give us more comfy space.
And yes, that is a big pillow between me and Josie, just to give us more comfyness. Is that a word? I think I just made it up.
And you can see, we are buckled in, just like our people. But do not worry, we can stand, spin around, sit, and yes, lay down and be comfy. All while staying on our own side. Truthfully, I am kinda thankful to be hooked in. It keeps Josie from taking up the entire back seat. Now she has to stay on her side.
Papa is also very thankful for us being hooked in. He says it keeps his mocha safe – from me. I sure do like me a mocha!
But don’t worry, I can stand and put my nose out the window to see everything that’s happening. And I like that, because I am a sightseer. I want to see everything that is going on. I can also put my head right next to Mama’s. She really loves it when I breathe in her ear and constantly lick her head. I am not the menace that Papa says I am!
So what do you think? Are we comfy?
Rest easy knowing that yes, we are indeed comfy.
Hi! We are Josie & Scooter - and we are the canines of this castle! We are living the good life with our people. Check out and enjoy our adventures!
