We found the drive through northern Texas and into New Mexico to be very windy and very dry.
We decided our first stay would be in Bottomless Lake State Park, so we could check out the nearby city of Roswell.
Jason and I were there for 2 nights before my parents caught up with us. Boy was Josie happy to see her Nana and Grandpapa – she even hopped right into their camper like she owned it!
Together we went into Roswell and of course, had to visit the International UFO Museum and Research Center. It was actually quite interesting to read about the “events” that took place and the supposed cover-up.
The drive through town includes lots of little green guys, alien heads on the lampposts, and even the local McDonald’s is shaped like a UFO. It reminded me a lot of the town of North Pole, up in Alaska, where you see Christmas everywhere you go.
Jason and I took the driving tour through the Wildlife Refuge and saw thousands of birds. Everything from swans, to ducks, storks, and hawks.
While at the campground, Jason and Dad ventured out on the mountain bike trail and enjoyed pushing their skills.
However, the biking did not last long. Once I made it out on the bike trails with Jason, I soon ended up with a flat tire. Even though we were a few miles from camp, luckily we were able to call my Dad to come rescue us with the truck!
We discovered that New Mexico is full of deadly plants! Including tiny hitchhikers with long thorns! We pulled at least half a dozen of them out of my tire. Even though we thought Jason’s bike was in the clear, we discovered that it too had a flat tire the next morning!
We definitely enjoyed our time at Bottomless Lakes State Park, and would be willing to visit again!
