Don’t worry, Leda doesn’t always stick her head out the window. Only when we are going slow or we are stopped somewhere.
Buckling my dogs in the back seat was such a good choice, I was wondering why I hadn’t done it sooner.
Our dogs have typically always ridden in the back seat of our vehicles. Traveling full time meant more time in that back seat. I used to worry about their comfort, but realized their safety was more important. But with the system I have come up with, they are not lacking in the comfort area.
There are lots of options out there, specially designed like a regular seat belt buckle. Some even come with their own harnesses too.
Since my dogs already had harnesses they were comfortable with, I wasn’t worried about that aspect.
When I was researching, I did struggle with finding an option that didn’t require the use of the buckle at the bottom of the seat.
Those of you who have big dogs know what a challenge the dog hair can be! And I don’t know about you, but I like to try and protect my vehicle as much as possible. Which means covering the seats.
I decided to find a way to use the regular seatbelts, but from the side. I purchased a 3 foot leash made by Ruff Wear. I looped the leash around the seatbelt and through the handle. It then hooks onto the back of the harness.
I find the 3 foot length is perfect for a big dog. They have enough room that they can stand, sit, spin around, and lay down. But it keeps them securely where they belong, in the back seat.
I also did not feel that a regular back seat designed for people was enough room for my big dogs. I wanted to extend their space.
For our quad cab F-350, I found that small action packers fit perfectly on the floor board between the back seat and the back of the front seat. So I bought 2, one for each side.
On the lid, I glued some foam and then covered it with fabric. I used my hot glue gun on the underside of the lid to secure it. The height is perfect so the dogs have more room and we have extra storage space to boot.
