What's next for us?
A question we’ve heard a lot lately. Those of you who have been following us since the beginning, may remember our original plan:
Summer 2017 we sold our house and hit the road. We decided to travel for one year, return to Fairbanks summer 2018, and reassess.
It’s only natural that finances would play a big roll in that decision making. We had launched in 2017 fully funded for 1 year, if we stuck to our budget. We had hoped to find ways of making money on the road. And while we did make some connections and progress in that area, truth be told we were in vacation mode for the majority of our travel time.
Jason planned to return to the same shop he’d been working at for 18 years, for the summer of 2018 so we could work on replenishing our bank account. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out as planned. It was a slow summer for his shop, right after coming out of a very slow winter.
However, after crunching the numbers we discovered we spent around $8,000 less than we had originally budgeted for while traveling. WooHoo! This helped immensely! We did not feel strapped in any way.
So we spent the summer in Fairbanks working on our bank account. Jason found plenty of projects to keep him busy and making money through his various connections – a nice perk to being in the same town for 19 years!
We parked at a friend’s property, and in exchange I helped him out in his office. Anything past the hours we agreed on for trade, he paid me for. So while I got to learn all about the business world, I also watched my Teachers Pay Teachers store really take off!
While we may not have been able to bank as much as we would have hoped to, we definitely made enough, and came up with a game plan on making more money while traveling this time around.
So what’s next? Okay, I’m finally getting to it!!
More traveling, of course! We have taken our leave of Alaska, and are headed south for more adventures and excitement! While we enjoyed being with family for the holidays last year in Ohio, we decided that wasn’t in the cards for us this trip. There is just so much to see! The USA is much larger than most people realize.
This time around we are headed towards the west coast! We want to spend some time in Washington, Oregon, and hop down into California long enough to check out the Redwoods.
We don’t have an actual route planned yet. But we are scheduled to be in Arizona for the Xscapers New Years Eve Party, closely followed by the annual bash in January! It is the only thing officially on our calendar.
We also plan to head back to our beautiful state of Alaska in the spring. There is after all an Xscapers convergence planned for Alaska in the summer of 2019 and we definitely don’t want to miss out on that!
As always, we’ll do our best to keep you up to date on our latest happenings.
